We help organisations across the public, commercial, and academic sectors balance scientific ambition with responsible innovation. Scientific and technological advances, together with rapid progress in artificial intelligence and computing, promise to transform genomics medicine and population health. But healthcare innovation can create unforeseen harms and inequalities. Those driving change face complex challenges in deciding what benefits to pursue, for whom and at what cost.
PHG Cambridge provides pragmatic guidance to build and navigate good governance frameworks that support innovation based on public trust, patient benefit, and long-term societal value.
Case study
Building human oversight into AI-driven diagnostics
For teams introducing emerging technologies into healthcare systems, the DELTA project is a working example of how oversight questions can be resolved early, through evidence and structured consensus-building, rather than left unresolved until deployment.
PHG Cambridge (then PHG Foundation) was commissioned to research the ethical and legal implications of the pathway’s novel elements. Through a series of stakeholder workshops, we worked with clinicians, lawyers and technologists to explore how the level of human involvement in AI-driven pathology should be determined and applied.
The project illustrates a challenge decision-makers are increasingly facing: introducing AI into diagnostic decision-making at scale, while keeping oversight, accountability and public trust intact. PHG’s structured, workshop-based approach brought together the range of expertise this question demands, and translated differing viewpoints into a practical, evidence-based position rather than an open-ended debate.
